Game of Thrones-Style
April 12th was a big day for millions of people. Three words. No, not “Hillary for president,” but more like “Game. Of. Thrones.” Season 5 premiered last Sunday night as about 8 million fans glued themselves to their screens for a good hour.
Okay, I’ll admit it. I’ve never actually seen an episode in its entirety. I’m not Game of Thrones obsessed. I’ve never read the series and I personally believe that the name “Game of Guess Who Will Live to See Another Episode” would be more fitting for the HBO series. Even though I know relatively nothing about Game of Thrones, I also feel like I know everything about it.
I share genes—and jeans—with some GOT addicts. I’ve gathered my few bearings on the storyline by now from hearing all my brothers and sister’s over-enthusiastic conversations about Westeros’ favorite dysfunctional family, the Lanesters. I know that Jon Snow made it to Season 5, there are too many power-hungry characters to count, and Aria Stark…straight up BA. I just haven’t made sense of any of the incest-filled, medieval inspired world quite yet.
What I have taken note of through all of the death, tragedy and relationship drama, however, are the impeccably dressed characters, Game of Thrones-style.
When a single episode costs upwards of 6 million dollars to produce, it’s clear that no expenses were spared on Daenerys Targaryen’s wardrobe. Daenerys may seem like the quintessence of beauty on Game of Thrones with her perfect white hair (that she obviously has had professionally colored), but she’s not the only character with taste for more than just blood. Sansa Stark, Cersei Lanester, Prince Oberyn Martell, King Tommen and Lady Margaery Tyrell would all be fit for the King’s Landing Catwalk. And that’s just the tip of the Winterfellian iceberg. While every animate GOT follower hoped King Joffrey’s death in Season 4 was twice as painful as it looked, they most likely failed to notice that he had been killing the style-game in a gold, velvet sashed suit at the Purple Wedding on that tragic, but climatic day.
From gowns, jewels and accessories, to shoes, cloaks and hair, let’s take a few pieces of advice from WWD—Westeros Wear Daily that is. Although winter may have ended, it’s still coming on the Winter 2015 runways, which are predicted to flaunt some Game of Thrones-inspired treads, while Fall 2015 runway collections snagged some GOT brownie points, from Philip Lim and Thakoon, to Emilio Pucci, Fendi and Prada. Fur stoles, lux velvets, patchwork and leather are just a few of the oh-so-popular trends that have made their way from the T.V. screen to the recent runway shows. These characters may not all make it out of the Game of Thrones alive, but they sure do deserve a salute for their Game of Style.
